If you are suffering from Stress, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Elevated Cholesterol levels, Type 2 Diabetes, Difficulty losing Weight, or Insomnia then this valuable and simple test may help to shed some light as to why.

What is a Stress and Sleep Hormone Profile?

A saliva Stress and Sleep Profile test is an assessment of the bio-available hormones present in your body. Saliva testing shows you how much of your hormones are in your tissues and are therefore active in your body causing the symptoms you may be experiencing as opposed to standard blood hormone tests, which assess total levels only. This test measures 3 Hormones including Cortisol, DHEA and Melatonin.

Cortisol Hormone

This saliva test provides information about which stage of adrenal exhaustion you may be in. Adrenal function is a key marker of how stressed or not stressed you are. Normal levels of Cortisol that slowly drop over the day are considered normal and healthy. Elevated or low levels of Cortisol indicated adrenal dysfunction and may be an early indicator into declining health or a conformation to the cause of certain health conditions.

DHEA Hormone

DHEA levels decline as we get older and generally correlates with a decline in cell mediated immunity and increased incidences of malignancies. Low DHEA to Cortisol ratios are frequently seen in people with depression, anorexia and panic disorders. Decreased DHEA levels may also be seen in many thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity, rheumatic disease and reduced immunity. Low levels also indicate a lowered capacity to endure stress, trauma, and injury.

Melatonin Hormone

Melatonin is known as the ‘Anti-Aging Hormone’ because of its potent anti-oxidant effect. It is produced in the pineal gland, retina, and gastrointestinal tract and regulates the sleep – wake patterns as well as modulating hormones levels, boosting the immune system, improves detoxification enzymes, and is a potent anti-oxidant.

What Happens in This Test?

Saliva samples are taken at specific times during the day, this involves collecting your saliva in small tubes, which can be done in the privacy of your own home. Your practitioner will show you how to take the sample as well as inform you as to what times your need to take them.

You cannot drink coffee or alcohol 8 hours before taking a sample, and samples should be done away from meals.

Samples should also not contain any blood from possible bleeding gums. Your naturopath will also provide you with an information sheet containing detailed information about how to collect the sample.

Once the lab has analyzed your samples they will send a detailed report to your practitioner, who will then incorporate the results you’re your individualized treatment program.
