What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin, usually due to hormonal changes and overactive sebaceous glands during adolescence. Acne is more common in males due to androgens (the male sex hormones) that stimulate the production of keratin and sebum (an oily substance produced by the oil glands). During puberty androgens increase in both sexes, therefore girls in this age group are also susceptible to acne.

What are the Symptoms of Acne?

Acne vulgaris affects 85-100% of people at some time. Acne appears in a variety of different types, ranging from contagious pimples to deep seated skin conditions. Acne is accompanied by black heads, pustules and pimples that are red, swollen, and contains pus. The pus is seen as a yellowish or white tipped centre in some blemishes. In more sever advanced cases, cysts appear, that are red, swollen lumps beneath the surface of the skin.

What causes Acne?

The exact cause of acne is not clearly known, however factors which contribute to or aggravate the condition include; heredity, oily skin, androgens (hormonal imbalances), allergies, stress, over consumption of saturated fats, hydrogenated fats, nutritional deficiencies, the use of cosmetics and menstrual cycles.

Excessive sweating can encourage acne and some drugs, e.g oral contraception and corticosteroids can aggravate the condition.

A body pH that is too high or too alkaline also fosters the nesting and breeding of acne causing bacteria.
