What is hay fever and sinusitis?

Allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever, is an allergic disorder.

It is characterised by itchy eyes and/or a runny nose after encountering environmental allergens such as pollen and dust.

In contrast, sinusitis affects your paranasal sinuses.

There are spaces under your face that lead to your nasal cavity. They hold mucus that clears your nasal passages, traps dirt and keeps the area moist. When your sinuses are blocked it can lead to infection.

What causes hay fever and sinusitis?

Hay fever is triggered when an environmental allergen enters your system such as dirt, pollen, dust or hair. Your body views the allergen as an intruder and releases antibodies such as histamine and leukotrienes to attack it. This flood of antibodies inflames your nasal passages, throat and eyes.

Sinusitis is typically caused by a bacterial infection in your paranasal sinuses. Bacteria can easily grow when there is a buildup of mucus or swelling of the sinuses and nose. This congestion may have been caused by hay fever, food intolerances, colds or an allergen.
