Are You Trying For a Family But Having Issues With Fertility?

Having a family is one of the greatest life choices that couples make.It is certainly exciting, and also very daunting at times. We all assume that we are capable of starting our families when we are in our prime years, however we are finding that for many different reasons, people are waiting longer to start their families. This wait and increase in age is resulting in higher incidences of couples being affected by infertility.

It is currently estimated that one in six Australian couples is infertile². In Australia, the cost to taxpayers in 2006 for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) procedures was an estimated A$78.6 million. These statistics and numbers are alarming.

What is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as the inability for a couple to conceive after one year of regular unprotected intercourse⁴, and for a woman over 35 years of age, she is considered infertile if she has not conceived within six months of regular unprotected intercourse⁵.

What are the causes of Infertility?

Factors contributing to infertility include sperm disorders, ovulatory dysfunction, pelvic dysfunction (e.g. endometriosis, adhesions or tubal disease), hormonal imbalances and unidentified factors⁴ ⁶.

“In about 60% of the cases, infertility is due to female factors,⁸” and while numerous medical causes have been reported, when there is no anatomical abnormality, causes can include altered physiological function of the reproductive system or abnormal genetic development of the ova ⁸.

Excessively thick cervical mucous has also been a known cause⁹. “Problems with ovulation and hormonal balance, fallopian tube damage often as a consequence of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis and low sperm count¹⁰” are the most frequently medically diagnosed conditions relating to infertility.

Environmental influences such as synthetic chemicals are key factors for infertility¹¹.These synthetic chemicals are known hormone disruptors.Dr Baranski of the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Denmark, stated that increasing evidence is pointing to environmental toxins and chemicals, including pesticides, as causative agents in the increasing problem of infertility and miscarriage¹².

What are the Medical Treatment Options For Infertility?

The medical treatment for infertility can be invasive and expensive.According to some research, assisted conception pregnancies are more likely to eventuate in various adverse outcomes.

One of the most frequent Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) methods used is in-vitro fertilization (IVF).IVF involves stimulating the ovaries by medications (most commonly by Perganol or Clomid) to release eggs that are then collected and fertilized. The resulting embryo is grown in a petri dish before implantation into the female uterus.⁶ However, ART is not limited to IVF treatment, ART is defined as any manipulation of reproduction² and can vary from IVF, to artificial insemination with partner or donor sperm, to hormonal replacement treatment, or surgical procedures which assist conception.

These treatments do not guarantee fertility success and commonly more than one type or course of treatment is undertaken. For a couple trying to conceive and being unsuccessful, they can experience a great deal of emotional / mental, physical and financial stress⁷.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health care modality that focuses on the relationship between the spinal column and the nervous system, most specifically the Vertebral Subluxation complex.Chiropractic is a natural approach to better health.

Your nervous system is the master control system of the body – it coordinates and controls the function of virtually every cell, tissue and organ.Your nervous system keeps you alive and healthy!

The spine encases and protects the delicate spinal cord.Tension or abnormal motion of the spine results in interference with normal nerve function and brain to body communication. This interference is termed a SUBLUXATION.

The ramifications of interference in normal nerve flow is dis-ease or dis-harmony within the body.Chiropractors focus on improving the function of your spine – helping information to run freely throughout your nervous system.

How Can Chiropractic Help Families Struggling With Infertility?

While chiropractic care is not a treatment for infertility, what research has shown is that by the removal of Vertebral Subluxations the resolution of female infertility may be achieved. Chiropractic treatment is a possible safe, cost-effective and non-invasive option for couples diagnosed with infertility.
