Candida and thrush: symptoms need the right assessment

Melbourne Wellness · · 3 min read

The word Candida is sometimes used online to explain a long list of unrelated symptoms. If you are worried, start with the particular problem you are experiencing and ask for an assessment.

What does Candida mean?

Candida is a yeast that can normally be present in areas including the mouth, gut and vagina. Overgrowth can cause infections such as oral or vaginal thrush. Healthdirect — Vaginal thrush.

Vaginal thrush may cause vulval itching or burning and changes in discharge. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so an online checklist is not enough to establish the cause. Healthdirect — Vaginal thrush.

This article does not use tiredness, bloating or skin concerns to diagnose a whole-body Candida problem.

When should you see your GP?

Seek medical advice for a first episode of suspected vaginal thrush, symptoms that keep returning, or symptoms that do not improve with pharmacy treatment. Pregnancy, lower abdominal pain or unusual bleeding also warrant medical advice. Healthdirect — Vaginal thrush.

For concerns in your mouth, ask a doctor or dentist about assessment. Oral thrush is a different presentation and needs advice suited to that site. Healthdirect — Oral thrush.

Bring a clear history

Write down when symptoms began, where they occur and what you have already tried. Bring a medicines list and mention recent antibiotic use. Ask what the clinician thinks is happening and whether testing is needed.

There is no Candida diet, cleanse or supplement protocol in this guide. If your main concern is digestive discomfort, our gut-health article explains questions for a medical discussion. A persistent rash deserves its own assessment; our sensitive-skin guide is a separate starting point.

Keep self-care simple

For vulval irritation, Healthdirect advises avoiding irritants such as soaps, bubble baths and vaginal hygiene products. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how this fits with your care. Healthdirect — Vaginal thrush.

If you are unsure where to turn, Healthdirect’s nurse helpline is 1800 022 222. Healthdirect — Vaginal thrush.
