Sensitive skin: making sense of irritation

If even a simple skincare routine feels unpredictable, you are not expected to keep guessing on your own. Start with what feels uncomfortable, what you have tried and what you would like help understanding.

At Melbourne Wellness, an initial naturopathy appointment makes time for your health history, diet and daily routine, followed by a discussion of a personalised plan. The menu also includes advanced skin analysis and follow-up appointments. Current clinic service menu.

Understanding the concern

“Sensitive skin” describes an experience, rather than one medical diagnosis. People may notice stinging, burning, itching or visible irritation after using products. Several conditions can contribute, so repeatedly changing products without understanding the problem may not answer it. DermNet — Sensitive skin.

Irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis have different mechanisms. Eczema, rosacea and other facial rashes can also feel sensitive. Your symptoms deserve assessment without assuming that all sensitivity has the same cause. Healthdirect Australia — Contact dermatitis. Healthdirect Australia — Eczema. DermNet — Sensitive skin.

Getting ready for your visit

Bring your medicines and supplements list, current skincare products or label photographs, and any diagnosis or advice from your GP or dermatologist. Tell us which parts of your routine feel manageable and which have been difficult.

You can ask what each proposed step is for, whether there are alternatives and when to review it. If testing is discussed, ask what question it would answer and how it fits with your existing medical care.

Practical questions

Does sensitivity always mean an allergy?

Irritation can happen without an allergy, and repeated exposure to water, cleansers or other irritants can matter. Identifying the cause involves your exposure history and, when indicated, medical testing. DermNet — Irritant contact dermatitis. Healthdirect Australia — Contact dermatitis.

Should I try several new products to repair my barrier?

A simpler routine can make it easier to identify a troublesome product. Discuss which products to pause or change with a clinician, particularly if you also use prescribed treatment. There is no single product that suits every cause of sensitivity. DermNet — Sensitive skin. DermNet — Contact dermatitis.

How should I choose fragrance-free or plant-based products?

Cosmetic ingredients, including plant ingredients, can cause allergic contact reactions. If you react repeatedly, a medical assessment can help you understand what to avoid. DermNet — Allergic contact dermatitis.

What about a rash around my mouth or eyes?

Periorificial dermatitis is one possibility and needs a different approach from some other dry or inflamed skin conditions. Steroid exposure can be relevant, but do not change prescribed steroid treatment on the basis of this page: ask your prescriber for an assessment and a plan. DermNet — Periorificial dermatitis.

Appointment options

You can discuss an initial naturopathy consultation or advanced skin analysis, starting with your questions and existing care. Current service menu.

When to see your GP or dermatologist

See your GP if a rash persists, appears suddenly, becomes painful or widespread, or comes with fever or feeling unwell. Suspected contact allergy may need specialist patch testing; this is different from trying a cosmetic on a small area at home. Healthdirect Australia — Contact dermatitis. DermNet — Allergic contact dermatitis.

Your GP or dermatologist looks after medical diagnosis and prescribing. Keep them involved in your care. Medical allergy testing and urgent care sit outside these clinic appointments, and skin imaging does not replace a medical assessment for cancer, nutrient deficiency or the cause of a condition.

The clinic’s menu excludes impaired barriers from hydradermabrasion and microdermabrasion. Discuss your current skin and medical advice before booking a bespoke facial or another procedure. Current service limitations.
