Do you describe yourself as an introvert, or know someone who does? A label can start a conversation, but it is still worth asking the person what they enjoy and need.
The archive’s ten-myth format is a useful prompt for rethinking assumptions. Here are ten ways to make the conversation more respectful.
1. Quiet means nothing to say
Leave room for someone to join in at their own pace. Ask about a topic they enjoy without demanding a performance.
2. Everyone wants the same introduction
Ask before making introductions or drawing someone into a large group. Courtesy matters whatever label they use.
3. A brief answer is rude
Check what the person means instead of deciding from the length of an answer.
4. Friendship has a fixed shape
Let people describe the friendships they value. You do not need to count their friends or rank their loyalty.
5. An invitation requires a long stay
Make it easy to join for part of an event and leave when ready.
6. Time alone means no interest in company
Keep offering invitations without pressure. Ask what kind of catch-up would suit.
7. Different interests need explaining
Show interest in a hobby without making someone defend it or speak for a whole personality group.
8. Quiet people are not paying attention
Give people a chance to respond. Avoid guessing what is happening in someone else’s mind.
9. There is one right way to have fun
Offer a choice: a walk, a shared meal, a busy outing or a quiet evening.
10. Someone needs fixing
Respect preferences. If someone asks for support, listen to the concern they describe rather than treating a label as the explanation.
