Naturopathy for men's health: what a first visit covers

Melbourne Wellness · · 5 min read

If your own health keeps sliding to the bottom of the list, this is a gentle place to start. It is for men in Melbourne looking for a naturopath: what a first consultation can look at, what to bring, and when your GP is the right first stop.

What can a naturopath look at with men?

A first consultation is a conversation about how you are going day to day. It can cover any of these areas, and you choose where to start.

Sleep

Snoring, waking up tired or lying awake at 3am are all worth mentioning. Being male is one of the things that raises your chance of obstructive sleep apnoea, where the airway partly or completely blocks during sleep. Healthdirect — Obstructive sleep apnoea Alcohol and smoking or vaping can also raise that risk. Healthdirect — Obstructive sleep apnoea We can talk through your evening routine, caffeine, screens and work hours.

Stress and mood

Depression affects about 1 in 10 men at some point, and it can show up as irritability, anger or frustration, not only sadness. Healthdirect — Depression in men Ongoing stress at work, money worries and the end of a relationship are among the life events linked with it. Healthdirect — Depression in men Talking it through is a reasonable place to start.

Energy

Fatigue often comes from several things at once, such as poor sleep, alcohol, too little exercise, a poor diet or workplace stress. Better Health Channel — Fatigue It can also be a sign of a medical condition, such as a thyroid disorder, diabetes or heart disease. Better Health Channel — Fatigue We can look at your routine and meals, and suggest a GP check when that makes sense.

Gut

Bloating, irregular meals and bowel habits are normal things to discuss. A recent, ongoing change in bowel habits, or blood in your poo, needs your doctor rather than a naturopath. Healthdirect — Bowel cancer

Skin

Shaving rash, dryness or breakouts are all fine to raise. Our post on a simple skincare routine for men covers the basics. Checking your own skin for new or changing spots matters too. Healthdirect — Skin cancer and melanoma

What should I bring to my first appointment?

You do not need to arrive with everything worked out. A few things make the hour more useful:

  • a written list of every medicine and supplement you take, including vitamins Healthdirect — Questions to ask your doctor
  • recent blood test results or letters from your GP, if you have them
  • what your partner has noticed about your snoring or sleep, which Healthdirect suggests sharing with your doctor too Healthdirect — Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • a week of rough notes on sleep, meals, energy and mood
  • the one thing you most want to change

Which questions are worth asking?

Questions you might bring along:

  • What is this step meant to help with, and how will we know if it is working?
  • What is the evidence for it, and what are its limits?
  • Could this herb or supplement interact with my medicines? Healthdirect — Questions to ask your doctor
  • What should I take to my GP first?
  • When will we review the plan?

When to see your GP or dermatologist

A naturopathy consultation does not replace a medical diagnosis. See your GP if you notice:

The free National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is for Australians aged 45 to 74. Healthdirect — Bowel cancer

See your doctor or dermatologist straight away about a spot or mole that changes size, shape or colour, or a sore that does not go away after a few weeks. Healthdirect — Skin cancer and melanoma

If you need to talk to someone about your mental health, Beyond Blue is on 1300 22 4636, and for urgent help call triple zero (000). Healthdirect — Depression in men If you are thinking about suicide, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time.

What can we talk about at Melbourne Wellness?

An initial naturopathy consultation runs for 60 minutes. We go through your health history, what you eat, how you sleep, your stress and your energy, then put together a plan with you. If something you mention needs a medical check, we will say so and suggest you see your GP first.
