Eczema: everyday care and when to seek medical help
Living with itchy, uncomfortable skin can make everyday care feel tiring. Whether you are asking for yourself or your child, start with what has been difficult and the care you already have in place.
At Melbourne Wellness, an initial naturopathy appointment makes time for your health history, diet and daily routine, followed by a discussion of a personalised plan. The menu also includes advanced skin analysis and follow-up appointments. Current clinic service menu.
Understanding the concern
Eczema describes inflammatory skin conditions that can be itchy, dry and uncomfortable. Atopic dermatitis is a common form. Symptoms may fluctuate, and the right care depends on the type of dermatitis and the person affected. Healthdirect Australia — Eczema. DermNet — Atopic dermatitis.
A rash can also be caused or worsened by something touching the skin. Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis are different possibilities; identifying the cause may need medical assessment. Healthdirect Australia — Contact dermatitis. DermNet — Allergic contact dermatitis.
Getting ready for your visit
Bring your medicines and supplements list, current skincare products or label photographs, and any diagnosis or advice from your GP or dermatologist. Tell us which parts of your routine feel manageable and which have been difficult.
You can ask what each proposed step is for, whether there are alternatives and when to review it. If testing is discussed, ask what question it would answer and how it fits with your existing medical care.
Practical questions
What is the place of moisturiser?
Regular moisturising is part of eczema care, including between flares. A plain, fragrance-free product is often recommended, but ask your clinician what suits your skin and follow your existing eczema plan. Healthdirect Australia — Eczema. Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne — Eczema.
Should I stop prescribed creams?
Discuss questions or side effects with the prescriber. Prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment can be important during flares; a naturopathic consultation or cosmetic product should not replace that plan. Healthdirect Australia — Eczema. Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne — Eczema.
Does eczema mean I have a food allergy?
Not necessarily. Food allergy and eczema are not interchangeable diagnoses. Do not remove major foods from a child’s diet or perform food challenges without appropriate medical and dietetic advice. Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne — Eczema.
Are natural products automatically gentle?
Plant-derived ingredients can cause allergic contact reactions too. Ask about a product’s ingredients and the evidence for its intended use. DermNet — Allergic contact dermatitis. NHMRC — Complementary medicines.
Appointment options
An initial naturopathy consultation or a return appointment makes space for dietary and lifestyle questions alongside your existing care. Check age suitability with reception before booking for a child. Current service menu.
When to see your GP or dermatologist
See a GP for a new or persistent itchy rash, troublesome sleep, or symptoms that are not settling with the agreed care plan. Seek prompt medical advice for possible infection, including worsening painful skin, weeping or crusting, or a rash with fever or feeling unwell. Children with worsening eczema need assessment rather than a home food challenge. Healthdirect Australia — Eczema. Healthdirect Australia — Contact dermatitis. Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne — Eczema.
Your GP or dermatologist looks after medical diagnosis and prescribing. Keep them involved in your care. Medical allergy testing and urgent care sit outside these clinic appointments, and skin imaging does not replace a medical assessment for cancer, nutrient deficiency or the cause of a condition.
For skin procedures, the clinic’s menu excludes impaired barriers from hydradermabrasion and microdermabrasion. Ask about suitability before booking while your skin is inflamed. Current service limitations.
