What comes home in the school bag each day? A quick unpack together can be a useful way to talk about comfort and what your child actually needs to carry.
Start with their experience. Ask whether the bag feels awkward, whether anything hurts and which parts of the school day are difficult. There is no need to turn this into a test of how straight they stand.
Check the bag together
Better Health Channel recommends a backpack suited to the child’s size, adjustable padded shoulder straps and using both straps. Pack heavier items close to the back and keep the load manageable. Better Health Channel — Back pain in children.
Try a practical check:
- Remove items that do not need to travel that day.
- Ask the school about lockers or books that can stay at home.
- Adjust the straps with the bag packed.
- Check that items are not moving around inside.

When to speak with a doctor
Persistent back pain in a child needs assessment, especially if it wakes them at night or comes with prolonged morning stiffness. Do not assume the bag is the cause. Better Health Channel — Back pain in children.
Take a short history to the GP: where it hurts, when it started, any injury and whether school, sleep or play are affected.
