If you have experienced a miscarriage, you deserve care and support without having to explain or justify how you feel. You may want information, quiet company or help with ordinary tasks. It is okay to ask for those things.
Get medical advice about what is happening
Bleeding in pregnancy does not always mean miscarriage, but it needs medical advice. Contact your doctor or midwife promptly, even if bleeding is light and you otherwise feel well. Healthdirect — Miscarriage.
If bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or you feel very unwell, seek emergency help. Call 000 for very heavy bleeding, strong pain or feeling unwell. Healthdirect — Miscarriage.
Medical assessment is important before deciding what happens next. The appropriate care and follow-up depend on your situation; this article does not give instructions for managing a miscarriage at home. Healthdirect — Miscarriage.
Take your questions to the appointment
You might ask:
- What have the examination or tests shown?
- What choices are available in my circumstances?
- Who should I contact if symptoms change?
- What follow-up do I need?
- Can someone come with me or help take notes?
There is no preferred outcome to achieve for anyone else. Ask the clinician to explain again if you need more time or clearer information.
Let support be practical
You could ask a trusted person to organise meals, help with transport or update others on your behalf. You can also decide which conversations you do not want to have yet.
In most cases, miscarriage is not caused by something you did or failed to do. Healthdirect — Miscarriage.
