What is Zinc?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral and is one of the few minerals in our body that is involved in over 300 fundamental enzymatic processes. Because of this Zinc naturally has a broad application to many health complaints. Zinc is found predominantly in the skeletal muscle (60%) & bone mass (30%), the remaining zinc is found in bodily tissues and fluids (10%).

Why Should I Have This Test?

Zinc is important for so many enzyme systems ranging from liver function to DNA synthesis, serotonin production, sex hormone production, insulin production, stabilization of the histamine response, immune cell production and those that prevent free radical overload in your body. Just to name a few!

Zinc is required for the production of hydrochloric acid that is essential to break down your food and extract all the goodness from it.

Thus zinc depletion is the cornerstone of many nutritional deficiencies. The question really is why wouldn’t you have this test!

What Happens in This Test?

Zinc Tally was developed as a “taste test” for zinc adequacy. By swirling the Zinc Tally around in your mouth your naturopath can gauge by your taste response to the Tally how good or how bad your zinc levels are.

1. No flavor or “like water” = Chronic zinc deficiency

2. No flavor to begin with, but later a reaction occurs described as either “dry”, “fluffy”, “mineral”, “like baking powder” or “sweet” = zinc deficiency

3. A strong but not necessarily unpleasant flavor is registered immediately and builds up little by little = no zinc deficiency.

4. An unpleasant flavor is registered immediately = no zinc deficiency, good zinc status
