What is Helicobacter Pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori), is a common bacterial infection that lives in the inner lining of the stomach. This bacterium produces numerous chemicals that damage the lining of the stomach, often leading to peptic ulcers. Once you are infected the bacteria often persist for years, if not for life.
Why Should You Have This Test?
By the age of 30, one in five people are thought to have a H. Pylori infection and by age 60, almost half the population is affected. H.Pylori is the leading cause of peptic ulcers, having a test means early detection of the bacteria, which may prevent the formation and development of peptic ulcers occurring in the future. This test is also useful if you are suffering from the symptoms of a peptic ulcer and you want to know if H.Pylori is the cause.
If Untreated, What can happen?
Most infected people have no symptoms. However, H. pylori can cause:
- Stomach ulcers.
- Some cancers of the stomach, including a rare type called lymphoma.
- Gastritis
- Duodenal ulcers
- Peptic Ulcers
- Increased risk of stomach cancer
- Dyspepsia
