What are allergies and asthma?
There is a close link between allergies and asthma. Allergies are the immune system’s response to fighting off environmental substances known as allergens. Examples of these allergens are pet hair, dust, pollen, natural proteins in foods and mould.
Most people’s immune systems easily process these allergens, but some need to work harder to do so. When your immune system is working in overdrive, it releases chemicals such as histamine which cause swelling and inflammation to the nose, eyes and skin. This results in common symptoms such as sneezing and coughing.
Allergic Asthma is the reaction your airways have when they encounter an allergen. Air is usually inhaled through the nose and windpipe which carry it into the bronchial tubes. At the end of these tubes there are tiny sacs that transport fresh air into your blood system and collect stale air to be exhaled.
Air is usually able to move freely and easily throughout this process. However, when you experience an asthma attack (encounter a sensitive allergen), the muscles in your airways swell, constricting the flow of air and making it harder to breathe.
What are the symptoms of allergies?

- Itchy eyes
- Dry persistent cough
- Asthma (persistent cough, wheezing and shortness of breath)
