Chiropractic Can Alleviate Your Headaches
Chiropractic is effective in providing safe, natural relief of headaches, not just back pain! It is estimated that 70% of males and 90% of females experience one or more headaches every year. Headaches may be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary headaches develop on their own, whereas secondary headaches develop as a symptom of another disease, condition or illness. Fortunately, very few headaches have a sinister cause. Chiropractors are well trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of more serious problems and refer appropriately.
There are different types of headaches; the most common being tension type headaches. This feels like a dull, diffuse aching and usually felt like a “hat-band” around the forehead, temples and back of the head. These headaches are thought to be brought on by fatigue and stress, tightness in the neck and jaw region. The Chiropractic adjustment is very effective in the treatment of this type of headache.
Migraine headaches are caused by sudden dilation of blood vessels in the head. They are usually present upon waking in the morning, and can last anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days. The pain is often felt on one side of the head, commonly affecting the eye and is described as a constant throbbing, and often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound. In a study conducted at Macquarie University, specific chiropractic adjustments to the spine significantly reduced migraines in 71% of the people surveyed. The frequency, duration, severity and amount of medication all decreased markedly.1
Sinus headaches are also very common. Frontal (forehead) sinus headaches usually begin early in the morning while maxillary (cheek) sinus headaches are usually felt in the afternoon. This type of headache is felt as facial pain or pressure of a dull, constant, or aching nature.
How can Chiropractic help:
The primary focus of chiropractic is the location, correction and prevention of impairments to the nervous system. Chiropractic care can be effective in headache management because it corrects impairments which often cause headaches. Chiropractic is extremely safe and is fast becoming a recognised health choice for headaches. They use gentle spinal adjustments to correct impairments to alleviate headaches and also provide lifestyle advice on helping to prevent their occurrence.
