Dietary Triggers in Children’s Eczema

- Thursday, October 23, 2008
Approximately 1/3 of children with atopic dermatitis have a diagnosis of cow’s milk protein allergy/intolerance, according to challenge tests. Approximately 40-50% of children under 12 months of age, with cows’ milk protein allergy/intolerance, have atopic dermatitis. In studies of children with food-related atopic dermatitis, positive challenges resulted in reactions in 75% of the children tested. These reactions consisted of itchy, measles-like or flat red lesions in commonly affected sites of atopic dermatitis. Most reactions occurred within an hour of the oral challenge, with eggs, milk and peanuts being the most common foods responsible for the reactions. Milk was the most frequently confirmed allergen inducing 10-40% of positive responses.
